How it all started
Our farm sits in a valley by a river in Hälsingland, far enough north that summer days barely get dark and the winter sun stays so low it never clears the valley at all. From late October to mid-February the land gets no direct light, not one ray, then it comes back and turns the same ground into a heat trap. The greenhouse behaves like its own continent. Tomatoes plot coups. I’ve failed at growing corn four years running.
I built Växa to make sense of the timing side of all that: what’s planted where, when to start seeds, what actually happened versus what I swore I’d planned. Växa Grund is the part that deals with space instead of time: real compass bearings, true scale, and a place to mark the shade I already know is there by hand, because guessing at orientation on a plot this stubborn stopped being good enough.
Växa Grund works on its own and it’s free, because laying out a growing space honestly is a problem any gardener has, whether or not they want the rest of what I built for this one.
Always know which way is north
Every space you draw has a compass rose on it, always. Set the bearing once, and every plot you place after that carries real orientation, not just a shape on a grid.
Draw beds the way you'd actually mark them
Straight-edged plots for raised beds and rows. Freeform curves for herb spirals and organic borders: draw the same way as a straight polygon, then switch the edge style to curved. No bezier handles to fight with.
Trace your actual space to scale
Upload a photo of your garden, calibrate it against one real measurement, and trace your beds directly on top. What you draw is what's really there.
Place real plants, not just coloured dots
Search a built-in catalogue and place plants with real spacing, height, and lifecycle, annual or perennial, right on the canvas.
Watch your orchard grow before it happens
Mark a tree, set its canopy radius, and toggle a projection of what it'll look like at maturity. See today that the apple sapling you're planting will eventually shade the vegetable bed, not just how small it looks right now.
Mark what you already know about light
Full sun, part shade, shade: a plain field you set by hand, because you're the one who knows a wall or a tree is casting shade there, whether or not it's drawn anywhere in Grund.
Take it with you
Export any view as a PNG, a print-ready PDF, or an editable SVG. Export the whole thing as a file and import it on another device. No account required, ever.
Your data lives in your browser, not on my servers.
Grund doesn’t have accounts, so there’s nothing to log into and nothing I’m storing for you. Everything you draw and plant lives in your browser until you explicitly export it. That means clearing your browser data, switching devices, or using a private window can lose it, with no way for me to get it back. Export is your safety net; use it before you make a change you’d hate to redo. I’d rather tell you this upfront than have you find out the hard way.
